I attended the Massy Sponsored 5k on April 6th 2019 and was amazed at the different types of people who attended this race.

Here is one of the guys I interviewed Mr Kris Deonanan, he came 5th in the Male Runners.

SNPhoto108: What challenges you may face as a runner?

Kris Deonanan: I face many challenges as a long distance runner. My previous sport was basketball, however, this has left me with many injuries, the last being a torn ligament in my left leg. This "forced" my transition to running. When training and participating as a runner, I tend to feel the soreness all over very quickly. Funny enough this is separate and apart from the mental battles of contemplating "why did I sign up for this?" to just "finish strong Kris!"

SNPhoto108: What do you eat to stay fit and healthy?

Kris Deonanan:   I normally try to eat local foods, from sweet potato, cassava, plantain, watermelon, banana, etc. I try to drink water regularly, and most of my juice is made at home from oranges, grapefruit, cherries, etc. On the weekend I do indulge in some fast food like pizza or bar-b-que. I no longer eat fries.

SNPhoto108: What are your exercise goals, do you have a personal trainer who helps you get to your fitness goals?

Kris Deonanan:  Most of my exercise goals are tied to running. I set times that I would like to accomplish for various distances, such as the 5k, 10k and half marathon, and then train towards it. I do not have a personal trainer, but I do have a "running buddy". His name is Cy, and he is an enthusiastic and motivated runner!

SNPhoto108: What are your feelings before, during and after a race?

Kris Deonanan:  Funny enough I still get a bit nervous before runs. This is exemplified by my 2 to 3 bathroom breaks before a race. During the race it is a constant "mind game" of observing other runners and trying to adjust my speed to the zone of "uncomfortably comfortable". Most times, my feeling after the race is based on if I accomplished my overall goal time.

SNPhoto108: How many races have you completed for the year and how many are you going to do for 2019?

Kris Deonanan: This year I have completed 2 other races. This is now very modest, as in years gone by I would try to enter every 5k possible. For this year I don't have a specific number set, but I would continue to manage my running schedule accordingly. Venture 5k and UWI half marathon are a must though!

SNPhoto108: What positive message do you have to say to anyone reading about your story?

Kris Deonanan: Positive message - Keep working towards improvement in all aspects of your personal life!!! Read a lot!!! Trust the process!!! Just get started!!! Don't stress about other people's opinion if it is not helpful!!!

SNPhoto108 : Thank you very much for letting me interview you for my blog, All the best to you and your future endeavours.
